No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu at IJJ Austin
The Modern Form

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is the form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practiced without the kimono. Athletes wear rash guards and shorts, and the absence of grips creates a faster, more dynamic style of grappling built on control, pressure, and movement.

Without the Kimono

What is no-gi?

No-gi is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practiced without the traditional kimono. Instead of a gi, students wear a rash guard and shorts, and there are no sleeves, collars, or pants to grab.

Without those grips, the game moves faster. Control comes from underhooks, overhooks, frames, and body pressure rather than grip placement. It's a style that rewards athleticism, timing, and the ability to chain techniques together before an opponent can settle.

No-gi also places a stronger emphasis on takedowns and wrestling, making it a natural fit for anyone interested in self-defense, MMA, or simply a faster, more fluid style of rolling.

Rash Guard
A fitted athletic top that replaces the gi jacket.
Shorts
Board-style shorts with no pockets or exposed hardware.
No Grips
Control comes from frames, hooks, and pressure instead.
Speed
Less friction means faster movement and quicker transitions.
Why Train No-Gi

Faster.
More fluid.

Faster Pace

Without the gi to grip, the game moves quicker. Positions change fast, so you learn to react, chain attacks, and stay a step ahead.

Control Without Grips

You learn to control using underhooks, overhooks, frames, and pressure instead of collar and sleeve grips, skills that translate directly to self-defense.

Wrestling & Takedowns

No-gi puts a bigger emphasis on takedowns and wrestling, building comfort on your feet and confidence bringing the fight to the ground.
