Gi Jiu-Jitsu is the traditional form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, practiced while wearing the kimono, or gi. The gi allows athletes to grip the jacket and pants, creating a much wider range of techniques for controlling, sweeping, passing, and submitting an opponent.
The gi (or kimono) is the traditional uniform of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: a jacket, pants, and a belt that shows your rank. Training in the gi is how the art was originally passed down, and it's still the foundation of everything we teach.
Because of the additional grips and layers of control, gi Jiu-Jitsu is generally considered more technical and detail-oriented than no-gi. Small adjustments in grip placement, posture, balance, and timing can completely change a position. The gi also slows certain exchanges down, giving students more opportunities to understand leverage, pressure, and the mechanics behind each technique.
Training in the gi develops patience, precision, and a deeper understanding of positional control. While speed and athleticism can always help, gi Jiu-Jitsu rewards technique and efficiency, making it possible to control and submit larger or stronger opponents through proper use of leverage and timing.
Every exchange starts with the grips. Learning to grab, break, and dominate grips is a skill set unique to the gi, and it sharpens your timing and patience.
The gi adds friction and handles. That means slower, more deliberate escapes and control, where good positioning beats raw speed.
With more control points available, the gi rewards precise technique over athleticism. It's the most technical, most special side of the art.
